52 Stories #24: "Der Hauptmann von Köpenick"

"When we moved from Ukraine to Berlin in 1995, we lived in a camp near Erkner, a former barracks for the Soviet army. It wasn't special, it was similar to my student dormitory before: five floors, long corridors, the kitchen in the middle, showers and toilets. Then we had to go to Altstadt Köpenick, to the social welfare office. A boy who had been there for a while with his family accompanied us. I immediately fell in love with this old building. Then we soon went to the adult education centre for our German course. There we learned about the Captain of Köpenick. Since then, I always greet him when I pass by. I was there again recently, opposite the bus and tram stop. I love this house. I was very proud that I was able to talk to the mayor there in 2017 at a meeting with volunteers who supported refugees in TK.What is your favourite place in Treptow-Köpenick? We look forward to hearing your stories. Share them in comments or your own story and feel free to tag the Living Neighbourhood Library." (Nina from Altglienicke)
